Rescue operations have successfully ended after saving numerous passengers who were left stranded in the air for 23 hours due to a cable car accident in southern Turkey. The accident occurred in the resort city of Antalya on Friday afternoon and resulted in one fatality.
The incident happened when one of the supporting structures, known as a pylon, collapsed, causing a cable car from the Sarisu-Tunektepe system to fall into a rocky area.
Okay Memis, head of Turkey’s disaster and emergency management agency Afad, reported that 174 passengers, including children, were safely rescued from at least 16 cable cars. These passengers were stuck in the air and needed to be freed through a challenging rescue operation.
Memis explained that the accident was caused by a failure of the mechanism at the top of a cable car pylon, which led to its breakage. After an extensive rescue effort, the last 43 passengers still trapped in the air were finally freed on Saturday afternoon.
The rescue team worked hard to ensure the safe evacuation of all passengers, even though the operation was complicated and dangerous. The team had to carefully navigate the challenging terrain and weather conditions to reach the passengers and bring them to safety.
