Today, Scottish adventurers Chris and Julie Ramsey announced the completion of their groundbreaking nine-month, 17,000-mile “Pole To Pole EV” expedition.
They achieved the world’s first drive from the 1823 Magnetic North Pole to the South Pole using a modified Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE electric vehicle, courtesy of Icelandic specialist Arctic Trucks.
The vehicle, equipped with larger tires and ice-friendly gear, had a reduced range of 150 to 200 miles due to the modifications.
During Arctic and Antarctic segments, the duo used creative methods to keep the battery warm, including building snow walls and using a dedicated tent.
They employed a mix of a 5kW wind turbine, a prototype solar hybrid charging solution, and a petrol generator for power, aiming to demonstrate the viability of electric vehicles in polar expeditions.
The Ramseys collaborated with Enel X Way to install chargers in Central and South America, making their journey more feasible and contributing to an extended electric Pan-American charging corridor.
Notably, this isn’t their first electric vehicle feat; in 2017, they completed the Mongol Rally in a modified Nissan Leaf Acenta, showcasing the evolving charging infrastructure along the route.
