Canada is set to introduce a special visa in 2024 for freelancers and digital nomads, allowing them to live and work remotely in the country without the need to physically be present at offices.
This move aims to attract international talent, and the visa will be specifically for digital nomads, defined as independent contractors capable of working from any location in Canada. The new program replaces the previous limit of six months on tourist visas for digital nomads.
Additionally, the government is working on a “tech talent strategy” to enhance the country’s workforce by attracting foreign workers, with a focus on the IT sector. Canada is dedicated to supporting remote work, and more details about the initiative are expected in the coming months.
Recent data indicates a rising trend in the United States, with 17.3 million Americans (around 11% of the workforce) identifying as digital nomads.
This reflects an increasing preference for freelancing and remote work, marking a 2% increase from 2022. The move by Canada aligns with a global trend of countries adapting to the changing nature of work by simplifying procedures and encouraging remote work, especially for qualified professionals.
