The caretaker government in Punjab has decided to try artificial rain again this month in an effort to reduce smog levels in Lahore. This decision followed a meeting between Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Governor Balighur Rehman at the Governor’s House. During the meeting, they discussed various public welfare projects, improvements in police stations, facilitation centers, and zoos, with a significant focus on addressing the issue of smog in the region.
Governor Rehman acknowledged that the smog problem in Lahore was severe, requiring exceptional measures to combat it effectively. He mentioned the success of the first experiment in inducing artificial rainfall, emphasizing the need for extraordinary steps. Consequently, it was decided to implement a second round of artificial rainfall later in the month to further reduce smog levels in Lahore.
The initial artificial rain experiment took place on December 16, with the Punjab government conducting a test using cloud-seeding over a limited area in Lahore. Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi revealed that this experiment received support from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He informed the media that approximately 10% of Lahore’s areas experienced rainfall as a result of the cloud-seeding experiment, which involved deploying at least 48 flares.
CM Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the dedication to the success of the artificial rain initiative, noting that monitoring and attentiveness began early in the morning on the day of the experiment. This commitment reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to find effective solutions to the smog problem in Lahore.
The decision to conduct another round of artificial rainfall underscores the seriousness with which the government is approaching the environmental challenges posed by smog.
Collaborating with the UAE for assistance in this experiment indicates international cooperation in addressing regional environmental issues.
