The interim Interior Minister, Dr. Gohar Ejaz, announced on Tuesday that the interim government would only consider suspending internet connections on election day, February 8, if a specific district or province requests it due to security concerns. This statement was made during a press conference in Islamabad, where Dr. Ejaz was accompanied by interim Information Minister Murtaza Solangi.
Dr. Ejaz clarified that no decision has been finalized regarding the suspension of internet services anywhere thus far. He emphasized the importance of addressing security concerns while ensuring minimal disruption to communication channels.
Just a day prior, Minister Solangi had also addressed the issue, stating that local administrations hold the authority to decide on internet shutdowns based on the law and order situation. He reassured the public that no such situation had been reported at the time of his statement.
Earlier, Caretaker Balochistan Information Minister Jan Achakzai had announced plans to temporarily restrict internet services in sensitive polling booths in the province on election day. This move was aimed at maintaining security and preventing any untoward incidents during the electoral process.
