In Nigeria’s northern state of Kano, the Islamic police apprehended 11 Muslims on Tuesday for consuming food during the Ramadan fast.
Kano, where a majority Muslim population resides, operates under both Islamic law, known as Sharia, and secular law.
The Islamic police, commonly referred to as Hisbah, conduct routine inspections of eateries and markets throughout Ramadan.
According to Lawal Fagge, a spokesperson for Hisbah, the arrests occurred after reports were received, particularly from market areas where significant activity takes place. Operations to enforce fasting regulations will persist, with exemptions for non-Muslims.
Fagge emphasized that non-Muslims are only considered in violation if found selling food to fasting Muslims.
Regarding the detained individuals, Fagge mentioned that they were released after committing to observe fasting from that point forward.
In some cases, their relatives or guardians were required to be involved for monitoring purposes.
