In a significant development for Islamabad’s public transportation system, the first shipment comprising 30 electric buses, part of a larger fleet of 150, is poised to depart from China and reach Karachi within the next three weeks. This shipment marks a milestone in the city’s transition towards sustainable and eco-friendly transport solutions. Upon arrival, the buses will undergo customs clearance before being transported to the capital, where they are anticipated to arrive by May.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the initial departure of the buses was scheduled for Sunday; however, it was delayed by a day due to adverse weather conditions. Despite this setback, arrangements have been made to ensure the safe and timely transportation of the electric buses to Islamabad.

Once the buses arrive in the capital, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will oversee their temporary operation through its contracted agency, the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC). The Convention Centre has been identified as the starting point for the buses’ operation, as it is equipped with the requisite charging infrastructure. This temporary arrangement will enable authorities to initiate public transportation services using electric buses while permanent facilities are being established.

Efforts are underway to establish a dedicated depot for the electric buses at Zero Point, which will serve as a central hub for maintenance, charging, and operational logistics. The development of this depot aligns with the city’s long-term vision to promote sustainable mobility and reduce carbon emissions from public transport.

The introduction of electric buses is a significant step forward in Islamabad’s journey towards environmental sustainability and modernization of its transportation infrastructure. It underscores the city’s commitment to embracing innovative solutions that prioritize cleaner and greener modes of commuting, contributing to the global efforts to combat climate change and improve air quality.
