Toyota’s ambitious $10 billion project, Woven City, is close to becoming a reality, with the first phase already complete.
Built on the site of a former car factory in Japan, Woven City is designed to be a “living laboratory” where residents can test cutting-edge technologies such as autonomous vehicles, smart homes, robotics, and new mobility solutions.
The first group of 100 residents, all Toyota employees, is set to move in by fall 2025. These pioneers, known as “Weavers,” will play a key role in testing and refining the technologies developed in the city. Over time, the community will expand to 360 residents and eventually house up to 2,000 people.
Toyota has big plans for Woven City, envisioning it as a hub for innovation. Some of the futuristic concepts include motorized wheelchairs, drones to accompany joggers, and robotic pets for elderly residents. The city is designed to encourage collaboration and innovation, creating solutions that can improve lives worldwide.
Renowned architect Bjarke Ingels designed the city, which runs on hydrogen-powered utilities to ensure sustainability. With its focus on blending technology, sustainability, and modern urban living, Woven City is expected to become a model for future cities around the globe.
