The Palestine Liberation Organization and nations from the Middle East and Africa make up the Arab League. Its goal is to encourage more intimate political, economic, cultural, and social ties among the participants. After an unusual meeting at its headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, the Arab League announced on Sunday that Syria has been re-admitted after an 11-year absence. After Syria was stopped amid a bloody crackdown on anti-government rallies, the re-entry is effective immediately.
“Syria becomes a full member of the Arab league as of this evening, and as of tomorrow, they are eligible to attend all meetings.
“Assad can go when the host country, in this case Saudi Arabia, sends the invitation, if he wants to”
Gheit added. Officials and commentators have stated that, while only symbolic, Syria’s readmission into the Arab League carries the risk of facilitating Assad’s international rehabilitation and perhaps enabling the lifting of debilitating sanctions against his dictatorship.
Since years, Syria has been subject to crushing Western sanctions, the most notable of which being the US’s 2019 Caesar Act, which imposed extensive penalties and barred people, businesses, or governments from engaging in economic activity that supported Assad’s war effort.
By doing this, the entire economy became untouchable. According to the UN, Syrians are currently experiencing previously unheard-of levels of poverty and food insecurity. More than 12 million Syrians, or more than half of the nation’s population, are expected to experience food insecurity by 2022, according to the World Food Program.
