A sword that once belonged to Tipu Sultan, a brave Muslim ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in South India, was sold for an astonishing $17.4 million at an auction in London. Tipu Sultan, also known as the “Tiger of Mysore,” was famous for his leadership during wars.
According to the auction’s official website, several weapons were taken from Tipu Sultan’s palace after his defeat at Seringapatam on May 4, 1799. The Bedchamber Sword, which was discovered in his private chambers, was one of them.
During the battle against the East India Company, Tipu Sultan was martyred, and the sword was reportedly looted. It was later presented to Major General David Baird, a British army officer, as a token of appreciation for his bravery and conduct during the assault against Tipu Sultan.
The sword, known as “The Sword of the Ruler,” is considered the finest and most important weapon in Tipu Sultan’s collection. It was crafted by Mughal swordsmiths who were inspired by German blades brought to India in the 16th century.
The sword’s hilt is beautifully decorated with intricate gold lettering that represents five characteristics of God and two invocations to God by name.
Nima Sagharchi, the group head of Islamic and Indian Art at Bonhams, highlighted the sword’s remarkable history, provenance, and craftsmanship. The intense bidding competition among phone bidders and those in the room did not come as a surprise.
Bruno Vinciguerra, the CEO of Bonhams, expressed his delight in achieving such an impressive result for this extraordinary piece.
Oliver White, the Head of Islamic and Indian Art at Bonhams and the auctioneer, emphasized the sword’s exceptional significance. He stated that it is the most remarkable weapon associated with Tipu Sultan that remains in private hands.
The sword’s close personal connection to Tipu Sultan, its impeccable provenance since the day it was captured, and its outstanding craftsmanship make it a unique and highly sought-after item.
