Iraq has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform itself into a regional transportation hub by improving its road and rail infrastructure, connecting Europe with the Middle East. The project, called the “Route of Development,” aims to span the entire length of Iraq, covering 1,200 kilometers from the northern border with Turkey to the southern Gulf region.
Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani announced the project during a conference with representatives from various countries in the region. The plan is seen as a way to diversify Iraq’s economy, foster regional integration, and contribute to sustainable development.
The project is estimated to cost $17 billion and could be completed within three to five years. Iraq’s road network is currently in poor condition, and the government aims to prioritize its reconstruction along with improving the country’s electricity infrastructure.
