The upsurge in taxes on electricity led to the revelation of shocking statistics. A substantial number of government employees have the privilege of using free electricity worth Rs. 8 billion producing a significant burden on public of Pakistan especially the low- and middle-class ones.
As per the figures obtained from the Ministry of Energy, almost 189,000 government employees benefit from this facility. The households of these officers have consumed more than 34 crore units of free electricity yearly.
Moreover, it is also expected that the liberty of free electricity can increase up to 99 crores on monthly basis and 11.5 crore on yearly bases. During the economic crisis and surging inflation, the situation poses a big question mark on authorities regarding the equity and sustainability of country’s resources provision.
