Canada Relaxes Requirements For Foreign Workers to Study: Details Inside

In a move to support the prosperity of the country and address barriers faced by temporary foreign workers, Canada has announced a new temporary measure that eliminates the limit on the length of study programs that these workers can enroll in without a study permit. The aim is to enable foreign workers to pursue their dreams, improve their lives, and contribute further to Canada’s workforce.

Expanded Opportunities for Training and Education

Under the previous policy, foreign workers were allowed to study while working, but only in programs of 6 months or less. For longer programs, they had to apply for a separate study permit, which created limitations for those seeking additional education, training, or validation of foreign credentials.

With the implementation of the new measure, foreign workers now have the opportunity to seek additional training and education, providing them with enhanced career prospects and increased chances of transitioning to permanent residence in Canada.

No Restrictions on Program Length

The temporary measure removes the restrictions on the length of study programs for foreign workers. They can now study full-time or part-time while their work permits are valid or until the expiration of the policy, without the need for a separate study permit.

Positive Implications for the Canadian Economy

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, expressed that this measure is a significant step toward addressing labor shortages and brings positive news for all parties involved. Temporary foreign workers are vital for the Canadian economy, and many have aspirations that go beyond their initial work in the country. By removing barriers to skills development, Canada aims to empower foreign nationals to improve their skills, fulfill their career goals, and contribute to the labor market.

Eligibility and Application

The temporary measure applies to those who currently hold a valid work permit or have a pending decision on their work permit extension as of June 7, 2023. However, it should be noted that if a foreign worker intends to study longer than the duration of their work permit, they will still need to apply for a study permit.

By implementing this temporary measure, Canada seeks to provide opportunities for foreign workers to enhance their skills, contribute to various sectors, and build a better future for themselves while benefiting the Canadian economy as a whole.
