A big supermarket in Qatar has decided not to sell any products from Sweden because of something bad that happened there. They made this decision because they wanted to show that they don’t support what happened to the Holy Quran in Sweden.
A video on the news showed the supermarket’s workers taking a popular Swedish chocolate brand off the shelves as part of their protest. Many people in the Muslim world are upset about the incidents where the Holy Quran was burned and treated disrespectfully during public demonstrations in Sweden.
It all started when an Iraqi person, who was seeking asylum in Sweden, burned a copy of the Holy Quran during a demonstration on June 28. Later, he threatened to do it again on July 20 but didn’t. Instead, he showed disrespect to the Quran by kicking and stepping on it.
Because of these events, a group called the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation decided to stop giving Sweden a special status, and the secretary-general of the GCC council asked Swedish authorities to take quick action.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) also strongly condemned what happened, including similar incidents in Denmark. A top diplomat from the UAE said that “hate cannot be considered freedom of expression.” The UAE doesn’t support using freedom of expression as an excuse for such disrespectful acts.
