People who own iPhones and were part of a group lawsuit against Apple are going to receive money. They said Apple intentionally made their old iPhones slower to make them buy new ones. A judge has said that the payments can happen, and this news was reported by SiliconValley.com last week.
This deal to pay the people got initial approval in March 2020. The time to join this deal is already over, but around 3 million people asked to get paid. Now, after more than three years, they are waiting to receive a check for $65 each.
There were two iPhone owners who disagreed with some parts of the deal and tried to stop the payments. They went to a higher court, called the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, but they lost, and the payments can now continue.
Apple got into trouble because in 2017, they admitted that their iPhone software was making older iPhones work slower. They said sorry and fixed the software. They also offered to change the batteries in the phones. However, Apple always said they didn’t do anything wrong. They explained that they slowed down the phones to stop them from turning off suddenly when doing certain things, especially if the phone was old, very cold, or had low battery.
The iPhones that are part of this deal are: iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, or SE, if they were using iOS 12.2.1 or a newer version. It also includes iPhone 7 and 7 Plus if they were using iOS 11.2 or a newer version before December 21, 2017.
