The Sarfaranga Cold Desert Rally 2023 in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region has come to an end, and it’s been a boost for the local economy.
Tourism officials reported that the event brought in over $825,994 in business for local businesses. This year’s rally, the fifth edition, took place in the Sarfaranga desert of Shigar district, known as the world’s highest cold desert.
Its main goal was to encourage adventure tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan and stimulate the economy in this remote area.
The festival wasn’t just about racing; it also featured various activities like freestyle polo, boating, river rafting, sword dances, music performances, and rock climbing.
Over 100 jeep racers and bikers participated, including two local women drivers, and 57 of them made it to the final round.
During the closing ceremony, GB Secretary of Tourism Asif Ullah Khan announced that the festival had brought in business worth $825,994 (Rs 230 million).
GB Governor Syed Mehdi Shah stressed the importance of such events in promoting the region and raising awareness.
Adil Naseem, who was named “Man of the Desert” after winning Category A, highlighted the potential of motorsports in Pakistan and suggested it should be embraced more, despite the perception that it’s an activity for the wealthy.
In the women’s category, first-time participant Gul Naseem secured the first place, inspired by her husband’s participation in the rally.
