In the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023, Pakistan faced a big loss to India, losing by seven wickets in Ahmedabad. After the defeat, Shoaib Malik, a former Pakistan captain, criticized the current captain, Babar Azam, questioning his leadership skills and his ability to think creatively.
Malik suggested that stepping down from the captaincy might help Babar focus on his batting and contribute more effectively to the team.
However, Mohammad Yousuf, a Pakistan cricket legend, strongly opposed Malik’s comments, considering them ill-timed, especially given the team’s pressure during the World Cup.
Yousuf emphasized the importance of keeping Babar as the captain, using the successful leadership of former captain Imran Khan as an example.
“During the World Cup, I don’t think anyone should discuss this. Also, Imran Khan led in 1983 and 1987 and lost both times before winning in 1992.
A good player should continue as captain for a long time. He is the captain because of his abilities, not because of his connection to the PCB chairman. He is a genuine leader,” Yousuf said.
Yousuf not only criticized Malik but also expressed disapproval of legendary cricketer Wasim Akram, who was part of the discussion panel, for not intervening.
In response to Yousuf’s criticism, Malik acknowledged his respect for Yousuf as a fellow sportsman.
However, he insisted on his right to express his opinions when asked a question and extended a message of affection towards Yousuf, expressing his admiration for the former cricketer.
