Saudi Arabia has introduced a ban on the practice of inscribing Quranic verses on jewelry and gold embroidery. This decision aims to protect the sanctity of the Quran, which is the holy book of Islam.
The Saudi Ministry of Commerce has stressed the importance of not engraving Quranic verses on jewelry due to concerns that people might use such items as talismans, which is contrary to Islamic teachings.
This move is supported by an official letter from the kingdom’s Mufti, who expressed concerns that inscriptions on gold items could lead to a lack of respect for Quranic verses and the risk of desecration when wearers enter places like restrooms
Additionally, the ministry has recommended against writing the name of Allah Almighty on disposable items such as paper, utensils, or equipment.
Saudi Arabia, being the birthplace of Islam and home to its two most sacred sites, the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, holds significant importance in Islamic tradition.
