Abu Dhabi has introduced new regulations for delivery motorcyclists in a bid to enhance traffic safety. The Joint Committee for Traffic Safety in Abu Dhabi, led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), has put in place these rules to ensure safer roads for all users.
The new regulations mandate that delivery motorcyclists are only allowed to use the right lane on roads with speed limits of 100 kilometers per hour. This measure specifically targets speeding and aims to safeguard road users. Additionally, drivers are now required to undergo annual testing and certification processes to maintain their qualifications.
Plan to Enhance Traffic Safety
To improve the overall traffic safety of delivery motorcyclists, Joint Committee has implemented a comprehensive plan. It includes initiatives to enhance the education and qualifications of drivers in the delivery sector. Moreover, ITC has developed a training program for delivery motorcyclists and an internship program for supervisors. These supervisors are responsible for organizing internal training programs for their drivers.
Following the completion of the training program, drivers must pass a written test to obtain their professional licenses. The ITC oversees the testing and certification process and requires drivers to renew their certificates annually.
Furthermore, the plan encompasses the establishment of designated parking areas for delivery bikes. With over 2,800 parking spots in Abu Dhabi and 200 in Al Ain. Additionally, efforts are being made to improve the quality of life for delivery drivers by providing permanent rest stops at carefully selected locations. To facilitate this, the ITC has issued parking permits for buses that serve as temporary rest stops for delivery drivers in Abu Dhabi City, Khalifa City, Mohamed bin Zayed City, Shakhbout City, and the Shahama Area.
The implementation of this plan forms part of a larger project aimed at reducing traffic accidents. By continuously improving, Abu Dhabi aims to ensure compliance among drivers and create a sustainable traffic safety environment. The project was initiated based on local studies conducted to identify the causes of traffic accidents. It also involved a review of evaluation and training standards for drivers applying for professional licenses, aligning them with international best practices.
