An Indonesian airline, Garuda Indonesia is conducting trials with jet fuel blended with palm oil in the engines of a Bowing aircraft as part of efforts to reduce emissions within the aviation sector.
Indonesia is the world’s largest palm oil producer and is actively exploring the utilization of palm oil in fuels to decrease costly fossil fuel imports. In 2023, the country introduced biodiesel containing 35% palm oil, the highest mandated mixture globally.
As per Garuda’s statement, the aviation company is currently testing jet fuel containing 2.4% palm oil in the CFM56-7B engines of a B737-800 NG aircraft. The trials were initiated last week representing a significant step towards supporting an eco-friendly and sustainable economy.
Following the engine test, ground and flight tests will be planned in the later month. CEO Garuda, Irfan Setiaputra stated that the airline is the pioneering commercial airline in Indonesia to commence renewable energy experimentation.
