Australia has unveiled its latest visa initiative, the Skills in Demand (SID) visa program, starting December 7, 2024. This program replaces the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa and offers skilled workers new pathways to live and work in Australia.

A Fresh Approach to Skilled Migration

The SID visa introduces three unique streams tailored to address workforce shortages and boost economic growth:

  1. Specialist Skills Pathway: Focused on driving innovation and high-impact job creation.
  2. Essential Skills Pathway: A replacement for the Labour Agreement stream, currently being refined.
  3. Core Skills Pathway: Targeted at fulfilling Australia’s workforce needs in key industries.

These pathways aim to simplify the migration process, offering more flexibility and quicker routes to permanent residency.

Easier Access to Permanent Residency

The SID visa comes with significant changes, making it more appealing to skilled workers. Applicants now need just one year of work experience to qualify for permanent residency. Visa holders can also travel in and out of Australia freely during their visa’s validity.

The program retains certain eligibility criteria, including English language requirements and relevant work experience.

New Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

Australia has also launched the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), featuring over 450 in-demand occupations across healthcare, technology, construction, and other sectors. Applicants in the Core Skills Pathway must meet salary thresholds ranging from AUD 70,000 to AUD 135,000. Higher earners may qualify for the Specialist Skills Pathway.

Transition from the TSS Visa

Applications for the TSS visa officially closed on December 6, 2024. However, existing TSS visa holders can still pursue permanent residency if they meet the criteria. Outstanding TSS applications submitted before the closure will be processed under the old rules.

The SID visa program is part of Australia’s broader plan to address labor shortages and attract global talent. Further updates on the program are expected in the coming days as the government continues refining its approach to skilled migration.

This new initiative reflects Australia’s commitment to streamlining migration while meeting the needs of its evolving economy.
