According to a recent press release from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday, Mushtaq Ahmed, a former Pakistan leg-spinner and World Cup champion, has been chosen as the new spin bowling coach for the Bangladesh cricket team.
Mushtaq is scheduled to join the team before the preparation camp begins later this month for the T20 series against Zimbabwe. His contract will extend until the end of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will take place in the West Indies and the United States.
Mushtaq brings a great deal of experience to his new role. He has previously worked as the spin bowling coach for England from 2008 to 2014, for the West Indies from 2018 to 2019, and for Pakistan from 2020 to 2022. He has also served as a bowling consultant for the Pakistan team from 2014 to 2016.
The 53-year-old’s cricket career is impressive. He took 185 wickets in 52 Test matches at an average of 32.97, and he took 161 wickets in 144 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for Pakistan. He played a crucial part in Pakistan’s victory at the 1992 Cricket World Cup, most notably when he dismissed Graeme Hick with a well-executed googly during the final match.
Mushtaq’s extensive experience as a player and coach in international cricket will be a valuable asset to the Bangladesh team, providing them with expert guidance in the spin bowling department.
