Federal Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb has unveiled major plans to reduce government expenses by restructuring federal ministries and cutting down on vacant job positions. The initiative, aimed at streamlining government operations, involves reducing the number of federal departments from 80 to 40 by June 2024. Additionally, 150,000 unfilled government job positions will be eliminated, with 60% of these already abolished as part of the initial phase.
In the first step, departments related to Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Safron affairs will be merged. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance efficiency, cut costs, and improve government performance. The ultimate objective is to create a leaner government structure while focusing on driving export-based economic growth.
Another key aspect of this reform is the government’s push towards complete digitalization, which is expected to further reduce costs and improve operational transparency. These measures are seen as critical steps to address economic challenges and lay the foundation for long-term financial stability.
