Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has introduced a new project to convert 8,000 agricultural tube wells to solar energy in the first phase. This initiative aims to help farmers reduce electricity costs and improve agricultural productivity.
Under this project, the Punjab government will provide a subsidy of Rs. 500,000 for each 10kW solar system installed by farmers. This financial support will make it easier for farmers to switch to solar power, reducing their dependence on expensive electricity and fuel.
The response to the project has been overwhelming, with over 530,000 farmers applying. After evaluation, 385,000 farmers qualified for the balloting process. The solarization of tube wells is expected to be completed by June 2025, allowing farmers to benefit from cost savings and increased efficiency in irrigation.
During the launch, CM Maryam Nawaz highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting farmers. She also mentioned other farmer-friendly initiatives such as the Kisan Card and the Agri-Internship Program, which are designed to provide financial assistance and learning opportunities for farmers.
By switching to solar-powered tube wells, farmers will have a more reliable and sustainable way to irrigate their crops. This initiative is part of the Punjab government’s broader plan to promote renewable energy and strengthen the agriculture sector, ensuring long-term benefits for farmers and food security in the province.
