Denmark Announces New Income Criteria for Foreign Workers

Denmark is set to introduce stricter income requirements for foreign workers starting January 1, 2025. The Danish government is aiming to ensure that salaries for foreign workers align with local pay standards before granting work-based residence permits.

According to the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI), this new income regulation is part of a broader effort to provide fair compensation to foreign nationals, ensuring that they earn salaries on par with their Danish colleagues in similar roles.

Ensuring Fair Compensation for Foreign Employees

The new rule comes as part of Denmark’s ongoing commitment to fairness in the workplace. By enforcing this salary threshold, the country aims to protect foreign workers from exploitation and wage inequality, promoting an equal working environment for both local and international employees.

In practical terms, this means foreign applicants for work permits will need to meet the updated income criteria, ensuring their salary matches the standards set for the position they are hired for. The government wants to guarantee that foreign nationals are not underpaid compared to local employees working in similar jobs.

Application Process and New Criteria

Starting from January 1, 2025, all foreign applicants for residence and work permits will need to demonstrate that their salaries meet the newly established income thresholds. This will apply to new applications as well as extensions under a range of schemes, including:

  • Pay Limit Scheme
  • Supplementary Pay Limit Scheme
  • Fast Track Scheme
  • Researcher’s Scheme
  • Positive List for Higher Education
  • Positive List for Skilled Workers
  • Special Individual Qualifications Scheme

This change also affects workers covered by collective agreements, where salaries are typically presumed to meet the required standards. However, in cases where the salary appears insufficient, Danish authorities will seek clarification from the employer before proceeding with the application.

Transition Period for Applicants

For applicants submitting their work permit requests between October 1 and December 31, 2024, the previous income standards will still apply. However, from January 2025, all new applications will be evaluated based on the updated income criteria. This allows for a clear transition period where applicants can still apply under the existing rules.

This move by Denmark is part of its ongoing efforts to create a fair and transparent labor market. By ensuring that foreign workers are paid at par with local employees, Denmark is setting a strong example for other nations in terms of equality and fairness in the workplace.

Through this initiative, the Danish government continues to prioritize fair wages and workplace equality, reflecting the country’s commitment to protecting both local and foreign employees.

The updated rules are expected to improve the working conditions for all involved, creating a more balanced and harmonious labor market in Denmark.
