Afghanistan has recently exported its first locally produced soft drinks, as stated by the country’s interim government spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid. The soft drinks, made from pomegranate, were manufactured in a factory located in Herat province, despite the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict.
Unfortunately, there were no further details provided about this initial export consignment by the interim government. However, earlier reports indicated that Afghanistan’s exports had increased by 63% compared to the previous year, reaching $1.9 billion. The main items exported were coal, dry fruits, and carpets, while linen textiles were the most significant imports from countries like China and Pakistan.
The situation in Afghanistan has been difficult, with poverty rates rising substantially after the collapse of the US-backed government and the Taliban’s takeover. Foreign subsidies and aid to the country were reduced drastically following the political changes, making it more challenging for aid organizations to support the Afghan people. Additionally, a Taliban government order in December last year barred Afghan women from working for NGOs, further complicating relief efforts. This restriction was later extended to the UN’s Afghan women employees, forcing the organization to consider difficult decisions regarding its aid programs in the country.
