Pakistan’s onion exports have hit a record high, surpassing $210 million for the first time. There are predictions that by the end of the year, this figure could reach $250 million, marking a significant achievement for the country.
The Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association has credited this record-breaking success to gaining access to new markets, particularly in the Far East and Middle East. This new market access became possible due to a ban on Indian onion exports, which opened up opportunities for Pakistani onions to fill the gap.
In the past, only the export of oranges from Pakistan had reached the $210 million mark. This makes the recent success with onions a notable milestone for the country’s agricultural exports.
To take full advantage of these new opportunities, there is a call for the government to take action to improve the shelf life of onions. This improvement would help ensure that the onions remain fresh for longer periods, which is crucial for maintaining their quality during transport to distant markets.
