Nestlé, as part of its commitment to Pakistan’s vision for renewable energy, inaugurated a biomass boiler at its Kabirwala Factory, under its PKR 2 billion umbrella investment in renewable power and sustainability initiatives. It is part of Nestlé’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in line with its 2050 Net Zero commitments, as well as the Pakistan government’s UN climate change pledge.
Inaugurating the plant, Christian Schmid, Nestlé’s Head of Technical for Asia, Oceania and Africa, said, “Nestlé’s ongoing investment in Pakistan reflects our deep confidence in the country’s potential. This biomass boiler not only underscores our commitment to sustainability but also to creating shared value for the people of Pakistan. Together, we are taking significant strides towards a cleaner environment and more sustainable future.”
This Biomass Boiler will help the Pakistan government achieve its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitment to reach 60% renewable energy by 2030. The boiler will reduce approximately 10,500 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions per year, which is equivalent to the emissions of 2,300 cars, and contribute to a 20% reduction in GHG emissions. Additionally, it will generate approximately 80,000 tons of steam per year, accounting for 85% of the renewable energy contribution to the factory’s total thermal energy needs, with anticipated fuel savings of approximately 6 million Nm3 of natural gas and 29 tons of heavy furnace oil annually

Highlighting Nestlé Pakistan’s commitment to this transition, he added, “We have already accelerated the use of renewable energy after having inaugurated two 2.5MW and 2.6MW solar power plants at Kabirwala and Sheikhupura in 2023 and 2024 respectively. This inauguration here today is another step towards in our larger renewable energy strategy.”
Nestlé Pakistan’s PKR 2 billion investment plan include two major solar power plants, two biomass boilers, and forthcoming additional solar power plants at its other manufacturing sites in Pakistan. Nestlé announced its commitment to reduce its emissions versus 2018 by 20%by 2025, 50% by 2030, and reach Net Zero by 2050 the latest, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 and 15.
With a strong presence of over 35 years in Pakistan, Nestlé is committed to the country’s economic growth by planning to enhance exports to USD 50 million by 2030. Nestlé Pakistan has further strengthened its localization journey, sourcing over 90% of its raw material and packaging requirements locally in 2024, while strengthening local industry.
