According to the Global Muslim Population website, the world’s Muslim community has reached a total of 2,006,931,770 people this week. This means that Muslims make up more than 25% of the global population of over 8 billion people. The report also states that Islam is the second largest religion in the world, following Christianity.
Islam is the official religion in 26 countries across Asia and Africa, and it is considered the fastest-growing religion globally. A 2017 report by the Pew Research Center projected that Muslims would become the world’s largest religious group, surpassing Christianity. It predicted that Muslims would grow more than twice as fast as the overall world population between 2015 and 2060.
The report also mentioned that babies born to Muslim parents are expected to outnumber those born to Christians by the year 2035. While the world’s population is projected to grow by 32% in the coming decades, the Muslim population is expected to increase by 70%, reaching nearly 3 billion by 2060.
In contrast, the report suggests that Christianity’s growth might be hindered by religious switching, potentially resulting in a decrease of 72 million people between 2015 and 2060. However, it indicates that religious switching will not have a negative overall impact on the growth of the Muslim population.
