Today (Monday), in order to show unity and respect for the rights of the working people, the entire world observes Labour Day. This day, also known as May Day, is held annually on May 1 to honour the contributions and accomplishments of workers around the world and to start the process of giving them job protection against any form of exploitation.
Like the rest of the world, Pakistan is also celebrating Labour Day. Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister, emphasised in his address the importance of the workforce to economic growth.
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister Office, the premier also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing workers’ living and working conditions and to enhancing their welfare by providing better housing, educational opportunities, and health insurance for them and their families.
He claimed that during the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), they discovered many inspiring examples of the respect for the rights of the working class and the dignity of the labourer. Keeping in view the high inflation rates and other economic challenges, PM Shehbaz said that the government had increased the minimum wages of workers from Rs17,500 to Rs25,000 per month.
In order to enhance transparency and reduce delays in giving aid to the labourers and employees, he added, the government also intended to establish automated, integrated systems for workers’ welfare organisations.
