Karachi residents are facing increased electricity bills as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has raised the power tariff by Rs4.45 per unit for K-Electric (KE) customers.
This decision, part of the first quarterly adjustment of the last financial year, means that additional charges will apply to the October and November 2023 bills.
Nepra has also approved KE’s request to include expenses related to the temporary operation of Unit-3 of Bin Qasim Power Station (BQPS-I) in cost calculations. However, some argue that these extra costs due to inefficiency should not be passed on to consumers.
Nepra held a public hearing where KE justified using Unit-3 of BQPS-1 to meet peak summer demand to benefit consumers, but the debate continues on who should bear these additional expenses.
