The Pakistani government, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is launching a significant project worth $594,748 to fight air pollution by focusing on reducing ozone-depleting substances and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). This project is funded by the Multilateral Fund Secretariat under the Montreal Protocol and aims to address the serious issue of air pollution. The project is expected to be completed by 2027 and was recently discussed by Romina Khursheed Alam, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change.In addition to this, the government is also implementing other important environmental projects.
One such initiative is the $28.72 million Sustainable Biomass Energy project, which aims to promote cleaner energy alternatives. Another key project is the $37 million GLOF-II initiative, focused on areas like Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This project is designed to address the risks posed by glacial lake outburst floods, which are becoming more common due to climate change.
To ensure these projects stay on track and meet their goals, the government will conduct monthly progress reviews. These reviews are intended to speed up implementation and strengthen the country’s climate resilience. Through these initiatives, Pakistan is taking significant steps towards environmental sustainability and climate action.
