Harbhajan, Irfan Say ‘Bad Umpiring’ Led to Pakistan’s Defeat Against South Africa

The ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 witnessed a dramatic and closely contested match between Pakistan and South Africa that ended in a one-wicket victory for the Proteas. However, the game was marred by a contentious umpiring decision that has sparked discussions and debates in the cricketing world.

The pivotal moment came during the 46th over when a delivery by Pakistan’s Haris Rauf struck Tabraiz Shamsi on the front foot, raising strong LBW appeals. Despite Pakistan’s referral to the Decision Review System (DRS), the on-field umpire’s decision favored the batsman, leading to questions about the accuracy and consistency of technology in decision-making.

Former Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan expressed their discontent, with Harbhajan calling for a reevaluation of the rules to ensure that if the ball is hitting the stumps, the on-field umpire’s call should not influence the decision.

Irfan Pathan also highlighted that South Africa benefited from two favorable decisions earlier in the game, including a wide and an LBW call, adding to the controversy.

Former South African captain Graeme Smith countered these claims, mentioning that a similar decision went against South Africa when Rassie Van der Dussen was given out in a similar manner. The match showcased the complexities of using technology in decision-making and raised questions about the consistency and fairness of the umpiring process.

Despite the contentious decision, South Africa’s net run rate helped them secure the top spot in the points table. Aiden Markram’s impressive innings of 91 played a vital role in their successful chase of 271, ultimately giving South Africa a critical victory in the World Cup. Pakistan’s pace attack also delivered a strong performance, but Keshav Maharaj’s composed batting sealed the win for South Africa in a match filled with thrilling moments and controversies.

Bad umpiring and bad rules cost Pakistan this game.. @ICC should change this rule .. if the ball is hitting the stump that’s out whether umpire gave out or not out doesn’t matter.. otherwise what is the use of technology??? @TheRealPCB vs #SouthAfrica #worldcup
