The National Institute of Electronics (NIE), operating under the Ministry of Science and Technology, has achieved a significant breakthrough by successfully converting a conventional 800cc fuel-powered car into an electric vehicle (EV).
This milestone was unveiled during an exposition held at Allama Iqbal Open University. The converted car features a 10-kilowatt motor that operates on a battery, marking a shift towards sustainable transportation technology.
Zawar Hussain, the General Director of NIE, expressed the institute’s dedication to advancing the electric car project towards full functionality. This effort reflects Pakistan’s growing interest in embracing eco-friendly transportation solutions as a means to reduce carbon emissions and dependency on fossil fuels.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s electric car market is witnessing expansion with the introduction of new models by various companies. Hyundai Nishat, for instance, recently launched the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 in the local market, further diversifying the options available to consumers.
These new models offer advanced features and technology, catering to the evolving preferences of Pakistani consumers. The company announced the prices of the IONIQ 5 at Rs. 22,500,000 and the IONIQ 6 at Rs. 23,000,000, positioning them as premium offerings in the electric vehicle segment.
Bookings for these models commenced on March 1, 2024, with an estimated delivery timeframe of 4-5 months. To secure a reservation, customers are required to make a 50% payment at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due upon delivery.
For prospective buyers interested in purchasing these electric vehicles, Hyundai has established dealership locations in key cities such as Lahore and Karachi, providing convenient access for potential customers to explore and book these eco-friendly cars.
