Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim updated his prediction regarding the semi-finalists of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 after Afghanistan surprised defending champions England.
In an interview with Geo News, Wasim shared his revised semi-finalists’ predictions based on the teams’ performances during the tournament. He now anticipates South Africa, New Zealand, India, and one team from Australia, Pakistan, or England to qualify for the semi-finals.
Earlier, before the tournament began, Wasim had initially predicted that Pakistan, India, England, and South Africa would be the semi-finalists.
The most significant upset of the 2023 World Cup occurred when Afghanistan defeated England by 69 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. This was only Afghanistan’s second World Cup victory in history and the first time they had triumphed over England in an ODI match.
Afghanistan achieved a strong start with Rahmanullah Gurbaz scoring a rapid 80 off 57 balls. Although they lost wickets in quick succession, Afghanistan reached a fighting total of 284 runs, thanks to contributions from Ikram Akhil, Rashid, and Mujeeb.
England struggled in their chase, getting all out for 215 in 40.3 overs. Harry Brook was the standout for England with a score of 66. Rashid and Mujeeb took three wickets each.
England now faces a challenging situation with one win in three matches, and their next match is against in-form South Africa on October 21 in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Afghanistan plays New Zealand, the table-toppers, on October 18 in Chennai, where their world-class spin attack could prove advantageous.
