The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced an indefinite suspension of internet services across the country. The decision to block mobile broadband services was made on the orders of the Ministry of Interior.
The move comes in the wake of protests that erupted following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case.
In addition to mobile broadband services being disrupted, major social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have also reportedly been inaccessible for many users in Pakistan since the start of the protests.
Videos depicting the violent protests were widely shared on social media platforms, leading to the decision to block mobile broadband services. The PTA spokesperson acknowledged receiving reports of social media platforms experiencing disruptions, but couldn’t confirm their veracity.
According to sources, “unwarranted” clips of the protests circulated on social media, prompting disruptions on various platforms from around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, causing inconvenience for citizens.
The suspension of internet services has raised concerns among the public, as it limits their ability to access vital information, communicate, and engage with digital platforms. The PTA and authorities have yet to provide an indication of when the internet services will be restored.
