The chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, Ibrahim Al Jarwan, stated that the crescent of Muharram, the first month of the lunar year 1445, is expected to appear on July 17, 2023. As per astronomical calculations, Wednesday, July 19, 2023, will mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year and the month of Muharram,” confirmed Al Jarwan.
He further highlighted that the first day of Ramadan is predicted to fall on Monday, March 11, 2024, indicating that there are 253 days remaining until the holy month begins. Based on astronomical projections, Eid Al Fitr, the Islamic festival that marks the end of Ramadan, is likely to take place on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, while Eid Al Adha, another significant Islamic holiday, is expected to occur on Monday, June 17, 2024.
As the start of a new lunar calendar year, the Islamic New Year, also referred to as the Hijri New Year, holds great importance for Muslims. Its date varies on the Gregorian calendar each year due to the lunar year being approximately 11 days shorter than the solar year. The Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle.

As stated by Ibrahim Al Jarwan, the chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society (ESA), the start of the new Hijri year, Muharram 1, is expected to be on Wednesday, July 19. In accordance with the official holiday list issued by the UAE government, the New Year’s holiday will be observed on Friday, July 21. Consequently, this will result in a three-day weekend.
