Lahore experienced heavy rainfall that broke a 30-year-old record. Commissioner Lahore Mohammad Ali Randhawa reported that the city received over 290mm of rain within a span of 10 hours on Wednesday. This amount of rainfall was unprecedented and indicated the impact of climate change and a powerful monsoon, according to the official.
Several areas in Lahore received significant rainfall, with over 200mm recorded in more than a dozen locations. The city administration and the Water and Sanitation Authority (Wasa) Lahore are actively working to ensure the efficient drainage of rainwater.
Comparing the current rainfall to previous notable incidents, Commissioner Randhawa mentioned that 291mm of rain was recorded, surpassing the levels of 256mm in June 2023 and 238mm in 2022. This remarkable amount of rainfall in such a short period has not been witnessed in the past three decades.
Once the rain subsides, MD Wasa Ghafran Ahmed assured that all low-lying areas would be promptly cleared. However, the heavy rain caused severe waterlogging on major roads and streets, making transportation extremely difficult. Some vehicles broke down due to the high water levels. In addition, areas like Shah Jamal and Tajpura experienced water entering houses, and power supply disruptions added to the hardships faced by residents.
