Luxembourg, a cozy European country home to around 614,000 people, recently made headlines by introducing the world’s first nationwide free public transport system, starting from March 1, 2020. This groundbreaking move covers buses, trams, and trains, allowing both residents and tourists to travel without purchasing tickets, except for first-class train passengers.
Even though the service is called “free transport,” it comes at a considerable cost, amounting to over €500 million. Taxpayers will foot the bill for the €41 million lost in ticket revenues, while transport staff will still be on duty, albeit with reduced time spent on ticket checks. The decision to implement this ambitious initiative serves several purposes. Firstly, it acts as a social policy to redistribute wealth by increasing taxes on higher-income earners. By removing financial barriers, the aim is to encourage a 20% increase in public transport usage over the next five years, promoting environmental awareness and cutting down on carbon emissions.
