KARACHI – Residents of Karachi are facing another challenge as the government has increased water and sewage charges by 23%.To address financial difficulties, the provincial administration implemented strict measures, including a 14% rise in sewage bills and a 9% increase in water rates. This decision was made during the fifth meeting of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, led by Barrister Murtaza Wahab.Despite the significant hike, the Water Board has decided to keep the new rates confidential to avoid public backlash.
This has caused concern among citizens who are already struggling with the rising cost of living in the city.During the meeting, several important issues were discussed, including the approval of the Water Corporation’s 46.259 billion rupee annual budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025. The board also approved new rates for water and sewage services for both individual and bulk consumers. Additionally, amendments to the Water Corporation Regulations 2024, which deal with the extraction, use, and management of underground water, were discussed and approved.
A committee was formed to oversee the completion of Phase One of the High Point Forebay as part of the 65 MGD additional water supply project. Board members emphasized the need for the Water Corporation to increase its revenue while ensuring effective service delivery to Karachi’s residents, as required by the Corporation Act.The decision to raise water and sewage rates has sparked concern among Karachiites, many of whom are already finding it difficult to manage their household expenses. The increase in charges is expected to further strain the city’s population.
