The PCB is on the brink of a leadership change, with Mohsin Naqvi poised to take on the role of chairman in the upcoming elections, potentially scheduled for next week.
The vacancy emerged when Zaka Ashraf resigned just before the end of his latest three-month extension as the chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC). Initially appointed in July of the previous year, the IMC’s task was to finalize the Board of Governors (BoG) and conduct chairman elections within four months.
With this not achieved in the given timeframe, the committee received an additional three months from the patron of the PCB, caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar.
Mohsin Naqvi, currently serving as the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, has been nominated to fill the vacant position on the board of governors, paving the way for his potential election as chairman. Even if elected, Naqvi is expected to retain his government position until the general elections in Pakistan on February 8.
The temporary charge of chairman is in the hands of PCB election commissioner Shah Khawar, who is set to conduct a meeting to clarify the schedule of the PCB elections. The elected chairman will serve a three-year term.
If Naqvi, who lacks prior experience in cricket administration, secures the chairmanship, it will mark the end of a year-long period without a formally elected PCB chairman.
