The National Highways and Motorways Police (NH&MP) have introduced new toll charges for vehicles without an M-Tag, set to take effect from February 1, 2025. Under the revised policy, vehicles without the electronic tag or with insufficient balance will be required to pay an additional 25% on the standard toll fee. The minimum surcharge has been set at Rs50.
Authorities have urged motorists to get their M-Tags before January 31, as the tags are available free of charge. This step aims to ensure a smoother traffic flow and reduce congestion at toll plazas, as the government moves towards a fully digital toll collection system.
In a notification issued by the National Highways Authority (NHA), officials emphasized that the changes align with efforts to implement a 100% M-Tag system on all motorways across Pakistan. The initiative seeks to improve efficiency, reduce cash transactions, and promote an environmentally friendly transport system.
In addition to these toll updates, new regulations have been introduced for vehicle eligibility on motorways. To obtain an M-Tag, vehicle owners must present a valid fitness certificate, along with their registration book and driving license. This requirement is part of a broader strategy to address air pollution, particularly in Punjab, where smog levels have reached dangerous highs.
Furthermore, vehicles older than 30 years will be restricted from using motorways between October and January each year, a measure aimed at reducing emissions during peak pollution months.
With these new rules, the NH&MP aims to enhance road safety, streamline traffic management, and contribute to environmental conservation. Motorists are advised to comply with the new regulations to avoid penalties and ensure a hassle-free journey.
