In a large-scale operation to combat electricity theft across Pakistan, authorities have recovered more than Rs118 billion and arrested over 85,000 people involved in stealing electricity. This effort is part of the government’s ongoing strategy to revive the struggling economy and address the severe energy crisis in the country.
The crackdown, which has been intensified in recent months, has led to a total recovery of Rs118.93 billion so far. At the same time, 85,330 individuals have been taken into custody for their involvement in electricity theft. This week alone, officials in major cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Islamabad, Multan, Peshawar, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Quetta, and others were able to collect over Rs3 billion from people who had defaulted on their electricity payments.
During the current week of September, 687 individuals were arrested for stealing electricity, which highlights the government’s determination to tackle this ongoing issue. Officials have confirmed that the crackdown will continue until the problem of electricity theft is completely resolved.
This initiative is seen as a critical step in addressing Pakistan’s energy crisis, which has been a major hurdle to economic growth. By recovering large amounts of lost revenue and holding those responsible accountable, the government hopes to ease the financial strain on the energy sector and improve the overall economic situation.
