Earlier this month, the Neelum Jhelum Hydroelectric Project started working again after a temporary shutdown. It’s now operating at its full capacity of 969 MW, which means it’s generating a lot of electricity. The shutdown happened because they needed to check a part of the project called the tail race tunnel (TRT).
They stopped the project in January during a time when there wasn’t much water flowing in the river. This break allowed them to carefully inspect the tail race tunnel. After checking everything thoroughly and getting approval from experts, they started generating electricity again earlier this month.
The Neelum Jhelum project is special because most of its important parts are underground, beneath big mountains. It was finished in 2018 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The project has a dam, long tunnels, and a big underground building called a powerhouse. This powerhouse has four units that make electricity.
Every year, the project makes about 4.6 billion units of electricity. Since it started working, it has made a total of 19.562 billion units of clean and green electricity. This helps to supply electricity to many people in the country.
