PTA has started the process of registering VPN providers, but no applications have been received so far. The registration process, which began on December 19, 2024, is expected to receive applications in the coming weeks.
To apply, VPN providers must go through a Class License for Data Services and set up data centers within Pakistan. This move is designed to regulate VPN services and ensure that they comply with data protection laws. The PTA aims to monitor VPN services more effectively and prevent the issues caused by unregulated VPNs.
VPN providers will be required to pay a licensing fee ranging from Rs. 200,000 to Rs. 400,000. If a VPN provider does not register, their services will be blocked. The PTA’s goal is to tackle the challenges posed by unregulated VPN services, such as security concerns and misuse of data.
By registering and regulating VPN providers, the PTA seeks to improve security and accountability in the use of virtual private networks.
The new regulations will also help ensure that VPN providers operate in compliance with the country’s data protection rules. This move is part of Pakistan’s efforts to better manage digital services and protect users’ online privacy and security.
As the registration process moves forward, it is expected that more VPN providers will apply and set up data centers, helping the PTA effectively oversee VPN operations in Pakistan.
