Freelancing websites worldwide have raised concerns about the internet shutdown in Pakistan, which has had a significant impact on the country’s freelancing community. Pakistan, known as the fourth largest freelancer country globally, is facing challenges in meeting project deadlines and repairing its reputation in the freelancing industry.

With approximately 120 million broadband users in Pakistan, 98% of them rely on mobile phones for internet access. The three-day shutdown of online transactions and digital learning has severely damaged the reputation of the freelancing community, highlighting the importance of a stable internet connection for their work.

Experts emphasize that the broadband internet shutdown has dealt a major blow to the digital economy and is contributing to unemployment. Aslam Hayat, an ICT regulatory expert, points out the negative impact of the shutdown on employment opportunities.

Muhammad Zohaib Khan, Chairman of the Pakistan Software Houses Association, expresses grave concerns about the complete halt of internet services. He highlights that the information technology industry has come to a standstill, as the internet is the lifeline and office infrastructure for IT professionals. Khan stresses the importance of restoring internet services immediately, as the IT industry cannot function without them.

Furthermore, Khan mentions the existing challenges faced by the IT and ITES services sector, including stagnant exports and potential declines caused by inconsistent government policies. He emphasizes that the current political turmoil has further hampered the industry’s operations. He urges Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to intervene directly and instruct the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to restore internet services promptly, as delays would have severe consequences for the reputation and business relationships of IT exporters.

Khan emphasizes the significance of timely delivery in maintaining the trust and loyalty of international clients. He warns that once clients or orders are lost due to delayed projects, it becomes exceedingly difficult to regain their confidence. Moreover, he notes that the ongoing law and order issues in the country have compelled most IT professionals to work from home, further exacerbating the challenges they face.

In light of these circumstances, Muhammad Zohaib Khan urges Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take immediate action, similar to his intervention during the Wikipedia blockage, and issue orders to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority for the swift restoration of internet services. This prompt action is essential to mitigate the negative consequences faced by the freelancing and IT industry in Pakistan.
