Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has officially launched Asia’s first Smart Village project in the rural area of Roras, Sialkot. This innovative initiative is part of the government’s Digital Pakistan vision and aims to bring technology and connectivity to rural communities, transforming their way of life.
The Smart Village project is designed to bridge the digital divide by providing internet access and addressing critical issues in health, education, and employment. By leveraging technology, the project seeks to enhance the quality of life for people living in underserved areas. It is being implemented in collaboration with several key partners, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Huawei, the NGO Bedari, and Tele-Education.
One of the main highlights of the project is a six-month training program aimed at empowering 100 young individuals by teaching them business and computer skills. This training will prepare them for better job opportunities and equip them with the tools needed to thrive in the digital economy.
The newly established Smart Village Centre will serve as a hub for various services. It will improve access to education through digital learning platforms, provide medical consultations via telemedicine services, and create new opportunities for residents by connecting them to digital resources. The project showcases a holistic approach to rural development, emphasizing inclusivity and innovation.
Plans are already underway to replicate this successful model across other regions in Pakistan. By expanding the Smart Village initiative, the government hopes to ensure that even the most remote areas of the country can benefit from the advancements of the digital age.
This project reflects Pakistan’s strong commitment to using technology for social and economic progress, empowering rural communities, and ensuring no one is left behind in the country’s journey toward a digitally connected future.
