A report presented in the National Assembly highlighted that Pakistan Railways earned PKR 47.7 billion from passenger services during the fiscal year 2023-24.
This revenue came as the railway saw a significant increase in passenger numbers. Over 41.9 million people traveled on Pakistan Railways during 2023-24, an increase of 6.5 million passengers compared to the 35.4 million in the previous year (2022-23).
Overall, Pakistan Railways generated a total revenue of PKR 87.5 billion in 2023-24. Out of this, passenger services accounted for the largest share at PKR 47.7 billion.
The freight segment contributed PKR 27.8 billion to the total revenue. Other earnings included PKR 1.33 billion from military transport and PKR 4.3 billion from property and land.
However, the report noted a decline in revenue from scrap sales, which fell by PKR 2.2 billion. Scrap earnings dropped from PKR 4.55 billion in 2022-23 to just PKR 2.35 billion in 2023-24. Despite this drop, the overall revenue increased, mainly due to the growth in passenger numbers and earnings from other areas.
The rise in passenger traffic and steady contributions from freight and property revenues underscore the potential for further improvement in Pakistan Railways’ financial performance.
While some areas, like scrap revenue, saw declines, the overall positive trend reflects efforts to attract more passengers and diversify income sources.
