Pakistan’s Naval Chief, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, announced this week that the country is in the process of developing its first-ever indigenously designed frigate-sized warship, called the “Jinnah Class Frigate.” This move is part of Pakistan’s effort to address the challenges posed by the complex and evolving threats in the maritime environment.
A frigate-sized warship is a type of naval vessel that is typically between 100 and 150 meters long and weighs between 2,000 and 4,000 tons. These ships are known for their versatility and are built to carry out a variety of missions, including surface warfare, anti-submarine operations, and air defense.
In recent years, Pakistan has been making significant efforts to strengthen its naval capabilities by adding more advanced warships to its fleet. As part of this effort, the country has recently commissioned two modern naval vessels, the PNS Babur and PNS Hunain, both of which are designed to improve Pakistan’s maritime security and enhance its operational readiness.
Admiral Ashraf also highlighted that the Pakistan Navy is focusing on acquiring modern naval platforms that utilize advanced technology and force multipliers. This strategy is aimed at improving the Navy’s overall strength and ensuring that it is well-equipped to handle future challenges in the maritime domain. The development of the Jinnah Class Frigate marks a significant step forward in Pakistan’s efforts to enhance its naval defense and indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
