Pakistan’s birth rate has been steadily declining, according to the United Nations World Fertility Report 2024. The report shows that the birth rate has dropped from 6% in 1994 to 3.6% in 2024. In 2023, it stood at 3.2%, reflecting a 1.88% decrease from the previous year.
The report also highlights a global trend, revealing that 1.8 billion people across 63 countries are now experiencing population reduction. This means fewer children are being born, leading to slower population growth.
Experts attribute this decline to several factors, including improved access to education, better healthcare, and changing social norms. Many families now prefer to have fewer children due to financial pressures and evolving lifestyle choices.
The United Nations urges governments to take necessary measures to address these changes. It recommends banning child marriages, strengthening protections for women’s and girls’ rights, and ensuring easy access to quality reproductive health services. These steps aim to create a more balanced and sustainable population growth while improving overall well-being.
With shifting demographics, countries like Pakistan will need to adapt their policies to ensure long-term economic and social stability.
